Byrne overtime winner
Windsor Border Stars’ striker Aaron Byrd scored his eighth and probably his most important goal of the season so far with a 95th minute overtime winner to defeat St. Catharines Wolves 2-1 in Second Round Open Canada Cup action Friday.
The game at Club Roma in St. Catharines was the first of three to be played in the Open Canada Cup over the Canada Day holiday weekend with no league games scheduled.
St. Catharines’ forward Antonio Stranges opened the scoring for the home side at 30 minutes for a 1-0 lead at the interval, and Border Stars’ defender Filip Roca scored the equalizer at 62 minutes for a 1-1 deadlock at the end of regular time.
The teams played a 15 minute overtime period, during which Byrd beat St. Catharines goalkeeper Caudio Perri at 95 minutes for a 2-1 final score.
