Shooters nip Serbia 1-0
Serbian White Eagles lost their brief 100 per cent record, a 1-0 defeat at home to Italia Shooters and London City picked up its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over North York Astros, two games in the Canadian Soccer League Friday.
Italia forward Kadian Lecky, who scored four goals last weekend including a hat-trick in his team’s 6-1 over London City on June 15, struck the lone goal at the 12th minute mark to give Italia the three points and a dominant top position in the International Conference standings.
The game, played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, was an end to end affair with lots of activity around both goals, but some near misses and good goalkeeping, especially by Italia’s Camilo Benzi facing shots from Radovic, Braletic, Pop and Viciknez for long periods to the final whistle.
Each team lost a player with red cards as a result of a second yellow. Milan Kojic was ejected for Serbia and defender Fitzroy Christie was ordered off from Italia. Both will miss the return encounter between these two teams at The Soccer Centre on Sunday.
Shooters improve to a 6-1-2 WLT record for 20 points and Serbian Eagles are now at 4-1-0 for 12 points.
Gerson Hazael opened the scoring for London City at the 18th minute mark, heading into the net for a 1-0 halftime lead at the Cove Road ground, London.
North York Astros tied the score to make it 1-1 at 74th minutes, the goal coming shortly after the Astros lost Brian Carbajal, ejected for violent conduct. Alessandro Bancheri struck the tying goal for the visitors, but seven minutes later, London’s Miguel Knox scored into an empty net following a miscue in the North York defence for a 2-1 final score.
London’s first win gives the southwestern Ontario side a 1-4-2 record for 4 points, while the Astros are at 2-3-1 for 7 points, both teams in the National Conference.
