Teams from three provinces
Teams from Canada’s three largest soccer provinces will meet this weekend in the Open Canada Cup Finals to be played at the Cove Road ground in London, Ontario, with the final on Labour Day Monday, a 4 p.m. kickoff.
Italia Shooters, London City and Windsor Border Stars are from Ontario, Trois-Rivieres Attak is from Quebec and is the reserve team of the USL's Montreal Impact.
The fifth team is ColumbusClan FC of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s Premier Division and they are the current British Columbia Provincial Champions.
Columbus Clan defeated Athletic Club of BC 1-0 in the BC Challenge Cup final on August 12, a competition involving 24 teams bidding for entry into the Open Canada Cup. They will now meet the CSL’s two-time Open Canada Cup winners Windsor Border Stars in the first semifinal at London’s Cove Road ground on Saturday, September 1. Border Stars have won the Open Canada Cup twice in the five years the trophy has been in existence.
The Clan currently hold second spot in the highly rated VMSL Premier Division, just one point behind league-leading ICSF Inter and they are the current Senior Men’s champion in their province and will bid for the national title in October.
A wild card game between London City and Italia Shooters will be played on Friday, August 31 of the Open Canada Cup Final weekend and the winner of that game will meet Trois-Rivieres Attak of Quebec in the second semifinal the following day. Italia Shooters are the current CSL champions.
The Open Canada Cup Final will be played on Labour Day, Monday, September 3, a 4 o’clock kickoff.
Ottawa St. Anthony Italia are the current Open Canada Cup holders, having defeated the Toronto Lynx 2-0 in the final last September 24.
