Lynx - Eagles clash Friday
TORONTO – Tuesday, July 11 - Serbian White Eagles have had it all their own way since returning to the Toronto soccer scene this spring, winning their pre-season exhibition games with ease and achieving a 100 per cent record in league play during two months of a five-month long CSL campaign.
But that could all change this Friday when the team that is coached by two of the best that part of Europe has to offer, comes up against the USL’s Toronto Lynx in Open Canada Cup action on Friday night.
It will be the first time the Lynx have taken on a team from the CSL or the former CPSL in serious competition since that league and the Lynx launched simultaneously in 1997.
And to add to the intrigue, it was the current Lynx coaching partnership of Duncan Wilde and Billy Steele, both of whom made a name for themselves in British soccer before coming to Canada, that won the championship with the CSL’s Oakville Blue Devils last season.
“We really want to win this one,” said Wilde speaking of a Lynx team that has come to life recently with solid wins against Vancouver Whitecaps and Charleston Battery.
“Eagles record so far has been very impressive and we have noted the talent from Europe, so it’s not going to be easy, but we are determined to advance to the next stage of the Open Canada Cup, so we’ll be giving it everything,” he added.
The Whites, as the Serbian team is also fondly known in Toronto, have the experience of players like ex-Obilic striker Sasa Viciknez, Romanian pro Gabriel Pop and the young attacking midfielder Alex Braletic, to name just three. But it’s the genius of the team’s coaches, former Yugoslavian great Dragoslav Sekularac and Stevan Mojsilovic from Red Star Belgrade that may help spell the difference in a game that promises to be top draw in local soccer this season.
