Border Stars dump Croatia
Striker Aaron Byrd of Windsor Border Stars led his team with two goals to a 3-1 victory over Toronto Croatia in a decidedly physical encounter at Windsor Stadium Saturday night, while in a second game played at Esther Shiner in North York, Caribbean Selects and Laval Dynamites fought to a 2-2 tie.
Byrd scored his goals at 13 and 41 minutes and midfielder Tati Errecalde struck the third Border Stars’ goal on a penalty kick at the 58th minute mark. Forward Tommy Ples scored the lone Croatia goal, his fourth of the season. Windsor defender Wil Kletzien failed to beat Croatia goalkeeper George Azcurra on another penalty kick.
Border Stars now have a 3-1-1 WLT record for 10 points, tied for the National League top spot with Oakville Blue Devils, while Toronto Croatia suffered their first defeat of the season and now have a 2-1-3 record for nine points in the International Division.
Rachid Madkour of Laval Dynamites struck his fourth goal of the 2006 campaign while assisting his team to the 2-2 tie with Caribbean Selects.Gilbert Iloanusi scored the second for Les Dynamites, while forward Steven Craig and defender John Lewis were the goalscorers for the Caribbean side.
