Viciknez the difference
Serbian White Eagles took a step closer in their bid to win the CSL championship with a 3-0 shutout of Toronto Supra Portuguese in a quarter-final playoff game at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, the only game in the CSL Monday night.
The Eagles move into the semi-finals on Saturday, to play the second game in what should be an immensely attractive double-header at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York, with the Serbian team taking on Windsor Border Stars at 5 pm to follow a Toronto Croatia vs. Brampton Stallions or Italia Shooters match at 1 pm.
The Brampton Stallions vs Italia game will be played this week following its postponement due to wet ground conditions at Victoria Park on Sunday. Windsor advanced following their 2-1 victory over Oakville Blue Devils and Toronto Croatia made the last four following a 1-0 squeaker over Laval Dynamites on the same day.
The always dangerous Sasa Viciknez scored twice for Serbian Eagles, his first on a penalty kick at 53 minutes when Bozo Milic was brought down in the penalty box and the second at 89 minutes with a solo effort. Alex Braletic found the net for the Eagles at 92 minutes to secure the 3-0 win.
With the CSL playoffs already attracting a great deal of attention as each day goes by, with the semi-finals this coming Saturday and the final game on October 15, there has been an added dimension to the last games of the inaugural season for Serbian White Eagles. Viciknez’s two goals moved his season tally to 23, the same as team-mate Gabriel Pop. The players have the semi-final game to clinch the goalscoring title – that’s when the league ceases to count and declares the winner.
