KANATA WITH TORONTO TEAMS BENFICA AND PENICHE ADVANCE IN OPEN CANADA CUP
Amateur teams Kanata, Benfica and Peniche have advanced to Round Two of the CPSL's Open Canada Cup following weekend wins at the Cove Road home ground of the CPSL's London City.
But we will have to wait until the Canada Day weekend of June 27 - 30 for the fourth amateur team to move forward from the Preliminary Round--that's when the AEK of London vs. Woodbridge Azzurri game postponed last Friday due to heavy rains, will be played.
The four winning teams will also join with the 12 of the 13 pro CPSL teams during the Canada Day weekend to complete the second round. Kanata scored an easy 7-0 victory over Whitby Iroquois, a team in the east division of the Ontario Soccer League, at Cove Road, London, Saturday.
The game kicked off the Preliminary Round of the four-month long competition being played during each holiday weekend during the summer, with the final on Labour Day, September 1.
On Sunday, Benfica of Toronto also advanced to Round Two with a narrow 2-1 over Real (Richmond Hill)and on Victoria Day Peniche were too strong for Exeter Centennials, the Toronto team advancing by a 3-1 score.
Kanata took the lead after just four minutes on a goal by Sylvain Cloutier who cracked a ball from 14 yards to the right of Whitby keeper Robert Currie.
Huffman Eja-Tabe made it 2-0 for the Ottawa-area team at the 22nd minute mark and Cloutier scored his second and made it 3-0 with a well-placed header six minutes later.
Pavel Cancura of Kanata made it 4-0 one minute from the interval.
Kanata continued the dominance in the second half and made it 5-0 on a penalty at the 52nd minute mark--Louie Legakis making no mistake from the spot.
Huffman Eja-Tabe made it 6-0 at 62 minutes and seven minutes later Manny Mendez came on as a substitute to make it 7-0.
Both teams ended the game short handed when Ryan Clery of Kanata and Dustin Nzeakor of Whitby were ejected.
Games two and three of the Victoria Day weekend Preliminary Round will be played on Sunday when Benfica (Toronto) meets Real (Richmond Hill) and on Monday Exeter Centennials (Southwestern Ontario) clash with Peniche (Toronto).
In Sunday's game, Philipe Silva put Benfica ahead after 38 minutes for a 1-0 score at half-time and three minutes into the second half Benfica's Frederico Pereira made it 2-0. Real cut the lead to 2-1 when Stuart Black struck with just one minute remaining in regulation time.
Alexandre Freixo opened the scoring after just two minutes for Peniche and Adiel Guilherme made it 2-0 at the 39th minute mark--the half time score. Exeter's Nathan Davies cut the Peniche lead to 2-1 three minutes after the interval and during a in a hard-fought second half it appeared the game could go either way until Jorge Carvalho made it 3-1 for Peniche. The goal came after 70 minutes.
