VAUGHAN SHOOTERS ADVANCE

Vaughan Shooters scored three goals in just eight minutes in the second half to take control of a hard-fought game and prevail 5-3 in the Eastern Conference quarter-finals of the Canadian Professional Soccer League playoffs at Birchmount Stadium Tuesday night.

The win advances Vaughan to the semi-finals and a game with Eastern Conference winner Toronto Supra at Victoria Park in Brampton, a rare Saturday morning, 10 a.m. kickoff in the CPSL.

In the first quarter-final game played on Sunday, Toronto Croatia dominated Windsor Border Stars 5-0 at Memorial Park in Mississauga to book their place in the wild card game with Brampton Hitmen on Friday night.

Croatia�s Edin Kalic scored a goal in each half and was the driving force in putting the game out of reach of the border team.

Vaughan midfielder Matt Palleschi opened the scoring for Vaughan Shooters at the 5th minute on Tuesday night,his 10th of the season, but Craig Patton tied the game 1-1 for the Lions at the 33rd minute mark, Patton's ninth of the season.

Maxim Dorneval scored his 10th of the season to make it 2-1 for Metro Lions at 38 minutes, but Vaughan's Fitzroy Powell tied the game 2-2 at the 53rd minute mark. Palleschi struck his second and 11th of the season to move the Shooters into a 3-2 lead at 58 minutes and Joey Todaro put Shooters into a 4-2 lead seven minutes later. Metro Lions' forward Darryl Gomez cut the lead to 4-3 at 69 minutes before Fitzroy Powell scored his second of the match and 11th at 87 minutes for a 5-3 final score.

Midfielder Halburto Harris opened the scoring for Toronto Croatia at the 9th minute on Sunday night and Jason Shanon made it 2-0 at 29 minutes. Forward Edin Kalic hit his two goals just before the break and again at the 57th minute mark, his 8th and 9th of the season. Rudy Spajic scored the fifth Toronto Croatia goal from a penalty when referee Gordon Arrowsmith pointed to the spot after Antonijo Zupan was pulled down inside the box.
