WIZARDS JUMP AHEAD WITH TWO WEEKEND WINS

Big week in league and cup for Toronto Croatia
A 2-1 win by Ottawa Wizards in what was described as the hardest fought contest in the CPSL so far this season, brushed aside a strong Hamilton Thunder bid at OZ Stadium on Sunday to end the dominance of the Capital City team and its attempt to run away with the Eastern Conference. Two second half goals by Kevin Nelson, last year’s CPSL Rookie of the Year and leading goalscorer, put the game out of reach for the Wizards following a grueling scoreless first half that could have gone either way. Hamilton’s Miles O’Connor cut the Ottawa lead to 2-1 late in the second half, but the Wizards held on for the win. Ottawa improves to an impressive 7-1-1 (WLT) record for 22 points to lead the Eastern Conference in a weekend that also included a 2-1 win over Vaughan Sun Devils on Saturday.

It was also a big week for Toronto Croatia which edged St. Catharines Roma Wolves, 2-1, in a Western Conference top of the table tussle at Memorial Park on Friday night and this important victory for Croatia followed a resounding 4-0 League Cup defeat of Toronto Supra on Monday night. Striker Mladen Dikic did the damage for the Mississauga-based Croatia, scoring a hat-trick in the first half of the 4-0 shutout. He has 10 goals so far this season. The first leg of the two-game home and away first round League Cup series between these two teams was abandoned at 2-1 on July 12 and will be replayed. Toronto Croatia leads the Western Conference with a 5-1-4 record for 19 points.

Mississauga Olympians won the only other League Cup game played during the week, a 2-1 success over York Region Shooters on Sunday to add to the same 2-1 cup win on July 1. Olympians go through to the second round on a 4-2 aggregate score. Montreal Dynamites picked up four points with a win and a tie over the busy weekend of nine league and cup games in the CPSL. Dynamites nipped Hamilton Thunder, 2-1, on Saturday and tied 2-2 with Vaughan Sun Devils on Sunday. Brampton Hitmen split their weekend, going down to Durham Flames, 2-1 on Friday, but making amends with a 2-0 shoutout over London City at Victoria Park on Sunday.

London failed to score in both weekend games, but picked up a point in the scoreless tie at home to York Region Shooters on Friday night.

Durham Flames were happy to pick up the maximum three points to improve to 3-5-2 for 11 points in a deadlock for third place with York Region Shooters in the Eastern Conference.

Games resume on Wednesday with a League Cup encounter between Hamilton Thunder and St. Catharines Roma Wolves.
