OTTAWA WIZARDS FIVE POINTS CLEAR FOLLOWING SECOND WEEKEND VICTORY
Ottawa Wizards have opened up a five-point margin over their nearest rivals Toronto Supra following weekend games in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
The Wizards defeated Metro Lions, 3-1, at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the victory came on the heels of a 5-2 success over Durham Flames at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa on Saturday. It was the Wizards sixth straight league win going back to June 8.
In another game played on Sunday, Brampton Hitmen swamped Toronto Croatia, 5-0, at Victoria Park in Brampton in a game that although one-sided was also stormy with two Croatia players ejected, each picking up two of a string of yellow cards handed out.
In two games played on Friday night, the London City vs Brampton Hitmen and Toronto Supra vs Vaughan Sun Devils both ended in a 3-3 tie.
Charles Gbeke opened the scoring for the Wizards on Sunday after just five minutes of play at Birchmount Stadium. He showed great aerial presence in heading home a cross from McDonald Yobe for his third goal of the weekend.
Abraham Osman of Ottawa made it 2-0 with a low shot that left Lions� goalkeeper Gregory Drakes with little chance at the 23rd minute mark, for the half-time score. It was Osman�s second goal of the weekend and his fifth of the season.
Darryl Gomez scored for Metro Lions three minutes after the interval, a penalty kick to cut the score to 2-1, and the Wizards scored their third goal at the 75th minute mark, a low shot to the right of Drakes for a 3-1 final score.
Hugo Herrara scored twice in the Brampton rout of Toronto Croatia, with Kurt Mella opening the scoring at the eighth minute mark, followed by Jonathan Bustamante at 65 minutes, Herrera�s first at 78 minutes, Marcin Wysocki one minute later and Herrera with his second three minutes to the final whistle. Toronto Croatia ended the game with nine men following the ejection of two players in the second half, each receiving a double caution.
Ottawa Wizards had an easier time in the only CPSL game played on Saturday, coming away with the 5-2 victory over a struggling Durham Flames.
Charles Gbeke opened the scoring for Ottawa at the 21st minute mark, Kevin Nelson added a second, his fifth of the season nine minutes later and Gbeke made it 3-0 at the 39th minute mark, the score at half-time.
Durham�s Ryan Dummett cut the lead to 3-1 two minutes after the interval, but Abraham Osman increased the Ottawa lead to 4-1 at 65 minutes. It was Osman�s fourth of the season.
Adam Vickers of Durham scored at 76 minutes for a 4-2 score and midfielder McDonald Yobe rounded out the scoring for Ottawa at the 81st minute mark for a final 5-2 score.
The Wizards now have a 7-0-1 WLT record for 22 points, while the Flames struggle at the foot of the Eastern Conference with a 1-9-0 record and three points and Metro Lions are at 1-3-2 for five points
Toronto Supra maintained its unbeaten streak with a 3-3 tie with Vaughan Sun Devils at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, one of two games played on Friday night.
In the second game, Brampton Hitmen came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score, also 3-3, with London City at The Cove in London.
Martin Peraza opened the scoring for Supra at the 22nd minute mark and Vaughan�s Timothy Carzon tied the score at 41 minutes.
The game turned into a see-saw struggle with Supra taking a 2-1 lead on a goal at the 76th minute mark by Sam Afriyie and Sun Devils made it 2-2 on a strike by Joey Todaro 12 minutes later. Supra took the lead at the 90th minute mark, a goal by Danny Amaral and Jason De Thomasis had the last say in tying the game for Sun Devils just before the final whistle.
The tie raises Supra�s unbeaten string in league and cup competition to eight and they now have a 5-0-2 WLT record for 17 points. Vaughan Sun Devils have a 3-1-2 record for 11 points.
London City squandered a 3-1 lead against Brampton Hitmen at Cove Road in London to concede two goals in the second half for a 3-3 tie. City also finished the game with just nine men, two players being ejected.
London took the lead on a goal by Ashley McMillan at the 21st minute and Brampton�s Phil Ionadi made it 1-1 eight minutes later. Eris Tafaj made it 2-1 for London after 45 minutes, the half-time score.
Eris Tafaj struck his second goal for a 3-1 London lead after 64 minutes, but four minutes later Hitmen�s Kurt Mella cut the lead to 3-2.
Ionadi scored the tying goal, his second of the game at the 87th minute mark for a 3-3 final score.
It�s just five days ago that London City were well into the second half with a 3-0 lead against Hamilton Thunder, but Thunder replied for four goals and London went down 4-3.
