WIZARDS THREE POINTS CLEAR WITH 2-0 WIN, SUN DEVILS IMPRESSIVE IN 5-1 ROMP OVER DURHAM
Ottawa Wizards stretched their unbeaten string to six league games with a 2-0 shutout of Laval Dynamites at the OZ Stadium on Sunday, the first of three games in the regular league schedule of the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
Just hours later, Vaughan Sun Devils romped to a 5-1 win over Durham Flames at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa and Brampton Hitmen played to a scoreless tie against Western Conference leaders Hamilton Thunder while mourning the loss over the weekend of one of their players.
On Friday night in the CPSL, London City continued its impressive form with two second half goals in as many minutes to defeat 2001 CPSL champions St. Catharines Roma Wolves, 2-0, at The Cove in London,
Toronto Supra were also outstanding with a 3-1 defeat of Durham Flames, Brampton Hitmen added to the woes of winless Toronto Croatia with a 2-1 victory, and Vaughan Sun Devils defeated Mississauga Olympians, 2-1.
A goal in each half by defender Greg Jehs, who headed home a Peter Mponda cross at 31 minutes, and Kevin Nelson at 55 minutes, was enough to give the Wizards a Sunday victory and three points to jump clear of their Eastern Conference rivals. Ottawa now has a 5-0-1 WLT record for 16 points.
Vaughan Sun Devils were highly impressive in their 5-1 defeat of Durham Flames, the second defeat for Durham at the Civic Stadium in three days and the seventh league loss of the campaign. The Flames have just one win in eight league appearances, a 3-2 victory over London City on June 6.
Willie Giummarra opened the scoring for Sun Devils after eight minutes, forward Eke Chibuezze made it 2-0 at 44 minutes and Jason De Thomasis struck from the penalty spot to make it 3-0 just on half-time. Flames reduced the lead to 3-1 on a penalty by Jahmo Welch, his sixth goal of the season, but Fitzroy Powell increased the Vaughan score to 4-1 after 69 minutes and another penalty kick, this time by Sun Devils Joey Todaro, made it 5-1 at the 78th minute mark.
Brampton Hitmen played in a sombre mood when they hosted Hamilton Thunder at Victoria Park in Sundays third game after learning of the death of Chilean-born Ricardo Jara, a Brampton player during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. The Hitmen and Hamilton played to a scoreless tie and the single point gives Hamilton a 2-0-3 record for nine points, one clear of North York Astros at the top of the Western Conference. Brampton improves to 1-1-2 for five points.
