SUN DEVILS, SHOOTERS MERGE
Vaughan Sun Devils and York Region Shooters have come together in a single-team merger agreement to kickoff the 2003 season.
The CPSL has announced that following discussions during the close season, the two teams will come together as Vaughan Sun Devils and will play out of the Dufferin Clark ground.
The merger results in 13 teams taking the field in the upcoming season, six teams in the Eastern Conference and seven teams in the west.
CPSL rules require that the member teams have a maximum 25-team roster, so the club will relinquish all players in excess of that maximum by May 15.
Tony De Thomasis, who purchased York Region Shooters in 2002 from its previous owner, Frank Bisceglia, will now be the principal owner of the new Vaughan Sun Devils.
�We think the move is a good one for the clubs, for York Region and for soccer,� explained De Thomasis.
�Bringing two pro CPSL franchises together as we have will produce one very strong team and this will show up on and off the field,� he added.
