TORONTO CROATIA DOMINATES BORDER STARS 5-0
Toronto Croatia dominated the first game of the playoffs for the Championship of the Canadian Professional Soccer League, winning 5-0 against Windsor Border Stars in the Western Conference quarter-final game at Memorial Park in Mississauga Sunday night.
Border Stars were stretched to keep pace with a Croatia team determined to make a strong bid for the overall title and the win advances the Mississagua-based team to a wild card confrontation with Brampton Hitmen at Victoria Park on Friday night.
Croatias Edin Kalic scored a goal in each half and was the driving force in putting the game out of reach of the border team.
The next playoff game will be played at Birchmount Stadium on Tuesday when Metro Lions host Vaughan Shooters in the Eastern Conference quarter-final, the winner advancing to the semi-final on Saturday morning. Kick-off time on Tuesday is 7.30 p.m.
Midfielder Halburto Harris opened the scoring for Toronto Croatia at the 9th minute and Jason Shanon made it 2-0 at 29 minutes, before forward Edin Kalic hit his two goals just before the break and again at the 57th minute mark. The goals were Kalics 8th and 9th of the season. Rudy Spajic scored the fifth Toronto Croatia goal from a penalty when referee Gordon Arrowsmith pointed to the spot after Antonijo Zupan was pulled down inside the box.
